I keep seeing the term regtech come up in fintech and compliance discussions and wanted to actually understand what is regtech before assuming it is just another word for compliance software. Here is what I have pieced together so far, would appreciate anyone correcting me or adding context.
From what I understand, regtech refers to technology specifically built to help companies manage regulatory compliance more efficiently, usually by automating processes that would otherwise be manual, slow, and prone to human error. This tends to cover a few specific areas, things like automated identity verification and know your customer checks during onboarding, transaction monitoring tools that flag potentially suspicious activity for anti money laundering purposes, and reporting tools that help companies stay compliant with financial regulation without needing a large manual compliance team handling everything by hand.
A lot of regtech seems to have grown out of financial services specifically, since banks and fintech companies face some of the heaviest regulatory burden, but I have read that it is expanding into other regulated industries too, things like healthcare and insurance, wherever companies need to prove compliance with strict rules on an ongoing basis rather than just at the point of initial setup. The value proposition seems to be twofold, reducing the cost and headcount needed to stay compliant, while also reducing the actual risk of human error leading to fines or regulatory action.
What I am still trying to understand is how regtech companies actually compete with each other, since compliance requirements are largely set by regulators rather than something companies can differentiate around easily, and whether the real competitive edge comes down to accuracy, speed, or simply being trusted enough by regulators and large enterprise clients to be relied upon.
Has anyone here actually built or worked with a regtech product? Curious what the real technical challenges were, and whether selling into compliance teams turned out to be as slow and relationship driven as it sometimes gets described.
There was a decent piece on Entrepreneur Plus Newsletter covering this that I came across recently, gave a useful founder perspective on the whole thing.
